Bonitos and Dolphin off Miami

Report Date: September 3, 2013

Sometimes it takes hours of emails and text messages to arrange a charter fishing trip. But once in a while, trips are arranged at the spur of the moment. Monday at noon, three Brazilian friends were walking down the dock. They had heard about good fishing off Miami and only had one chance to try fishing before they flew home. Luckily the crew of the Blue Waters II had just finished some filter and maintenance work and were glad to talk about fishing not fixing. The guests booked the boat on the spot and away we went.

Captain John had heard that the live bait was not easy to find, so trolling it was. Once the boat got to 90' of water the summer bonitas struck all the lines. The guys had a ball fighting the fish and three common bonitas were boated. The captain then veered off shore and the hunt for the dolphin was on.

After a hour of clean ocean, the mate spotted diving birds and a patch of weed. As soon as the lines crossed the weed, the dolphin attacked the spread. With limited English, we managed to boat three legal sized fish while releasing several other small ones. The fish disappeared as fast as they appeared and it was time to head home and enjoy a cold brew. The customers are planning on returning for fall sailfish and shark fishing.
