Sailfish GaloreReport Date: March 19, 2017Finally, a good cold front to move the bait and fish. We took a fun loving father and son team out fishing for a 5 hour trip. The west northwest wind was about 20 knots but the ocean was comfortable. The first stop was at the radar stantion. Armed with sabiki rigs on super light tackle, the anglers helped fill the well with good sized herring and some pilchards. Warmed up, Capt. John scooted out the edge and settled in about 120' just on the edge. The wind was holding the boat and as soon as the live baits were out, there was two large bonita bites, one right after the other. The young angler fought these fish right to the boat. He was slightly tired, but it was not long before another line sang out, and a sailfish was on. Richard (the dad) was given the rod and he captured his first ever sailfish. There was barely time for a quick tag and picture when the live baits produced a second sailfish. The son was ready to fight the fish so he did. After some runs and terrific jumps, the sailfish was brought up to tag and release. There was barely time to reset the baits when the guys hooked another double header sailfish! Of course, both fish ran in different directions but the crew took the time to allow the fish to stop running and then the anglers fought the fish on spinners and light line. Both fish were brought up to the boat and released.
