See Miami Like a Native, Go Fishing

Report Date: July 23, 2013

A recent guest aboard the Blue Waters 2 was Marcelo visiting Miami from Brazil. After enjoying the South Beach nightlife, he wanted to spend a day relaxing and enjoying Miami's piscatorial pursuits and ocean vistas.

Capt. John eased the Blue Waters 2 into position next to the range marker off Government Cut. It's always nice when the bait cooperates first thing in the morning. Soon, the bait well was blacked-out with threadfins, pilchards and a few pinfish.

Captain John slipped the boat into gear and headed the short distance to the edge of the reef line. He quickly found a beautiful color change in 250'. The current rip in gulfstream looked awesome. The water was deep blue and clear on the ocean side of the rip. A good amount of weed and other debris clearly marked the edge where the blue and green water met. There were also a pair of frigate birds working the area. After an hour, the only thing missing was fish – no dolphin, no sailfish, nothing.

After an hour, the team decided to find a shallower edge and get the kite out. Soon, there was a spread of baits on the kite and the riggers. Almost immediately upon getting the spread out, a large kingfish skyrocketed under the long kite bait – luckily we were rigged with a wire leader and the fight was on.

After the smoker king was boated we saw a flurry of bonito bites that kept the crew and our guests jumping from rod to rod. The day ended with a couple of hits on the bottom rods. The first was a nice and tasty mutton snapper. The last fish put up quite the battle and actually fooled our crew for a while thinking it was a grouper of some type - but it turned out to be a 5' round nose shark! Don't see many of those.

Marcelo is leaving Miami with a few fish stories and the pictures to prove it. He said he would be back in February for the height of the sailfish season. Great guy, can wait to welcome him back to Miami.
